Apple Wanted to Make the Switch from OLED to Customs MicroLED Displays

Report to Bloomberg Apple might make the switch to a MicroLED display in the future. Currently, Apple displays are made by multiple vendors like LG, and Samsung. 

The report says Apple has been successful to make the transition to custom processors and reduced reliance on Intel or AMD chips. Devices could use an In-house microLED display.



Why does Apple Want to Make the Switch?

Apple this idea isn't new. Apple working on this since 2018. But the technological issues and the overarching costs made it unfeasible to embed. That's why Apple decided to move on to MicroLED displays.


Another from Mark Gurman's report, Apple plans to gain more control over major components in its device. M1 and M2 are powerful processors that make a small tablet a powerhouse. Example: Apple IPad.

In this generation, users are accustomed to using small or low PPI displays. Now Apple has premium alternatives with better displays. But, Apple wants to make it different. After that news, the share price of LG flattened by 4.1 percent. Just because LG is the major vendor of Apple.


Mark Gurman's also highlighted that MicroLED makes appear like it's painted on the glass. But, they refused to share their's name with people who got the chance to see the display.

Until 2024 or even later, you may not see the MicroLED displays on the Apple watch. its manufacturing falls into TSMC's lap. 

Apple will take control over the display's design and make MicroLED displays for companies.
